You’ll Probably Drive More

This is one of the biggest adjustments for people accustomed to walking out the door and having everything within a few blocks.

Downtown Raleigh is walkable enough to grab dinner, meet friends for drinks, get coffee, or attend an event without getting in the car. But the Triangle as a whole is spread out. Raleigh, Durham, Cary, Chapel Hill, and the surrounding communities are connected more by highways than public transportation.

Having a car makes exploring the area considerably easier. The upside? Parking is generally much less of an ordeal than it is in a bigger city.

“The Triangle” Is Bigger Than You Think

Before moving here, it’s easy to picture Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill as essentially one place. Once you arrive, you quickly realize each has its own personality, downtown, neighborhoods, restaurants, and things to do.

The Pace Really Is Slower

You’re Closer to Nature Than You Might Expect

In a bigger city, getting outside can sometimes require planning an entire day around it. In Raleigh, green space is woven into everyday life.

The area has an extensive greenway system, plenty of parks, and easy access to lakes and trails. Even downtown, you’re not far from somewhere you can walk, run, bike, or simply spend a little time outside.

And when you want a bigger change of scenery, North Carolina gives you options. The mountains and the coast are both within reach for a weekend away.

It Can Take Time to Figure Out Where You Belong

One challenge for new arrivals is that the Triangle doesn’t have a single obvious center of gravity. Your favorite coffee shop might be in Raleigh, your office in Cary, your best friend in Durham, and the restaurant you keep returning to in Chapel Hill.

That can feel strange if you’re used to identifying strongly with one neighborhood. Give yourself time to explore before deciding what your version of the Triangle looks like.
