3 Ways to Keep Pet Travel Simple

Your job is sending you to a new major metropolitan area for work. You’ve booked your short-term apartment for three months, packed all your bags, and are ready to hunker down in a new city. That is, until you realize that Fido’s sitter is out of town too. It’s not easy leaving your fur baby at home while you travel, so why should you? Traveling with a dog or a cat can seem a bit tedious for the unseasoned pet traveler, but it’s a lot simpler than one would think! The work is all in the preparation, and luckily, Revisn’s short term apartments are pet-friendly all 365 days of the year!

Before you go

Before you hit “book” on your flight, make sure to have your pet assessed by their veterinarian to determine if they are suitable to fly. Some animals, due to age, illness, or general temperament, are unfit to fly, and would be better off staying with a friend or lodged. If your furry friend is all good to go, gather all ID tags, medical reports, and microchip contact information to have at your disposal. It’s important to have reference documents in the event of a medical emergency or accident.

Travel

Now that you’ve got Fido all packed up, make sure to pick an airline that will permit your pet to fly in a way you are comfortable with. Can they sit with you in the cabin, or will they be relegated to cargo? Be sure you have a roomy, ventilated pet carrier that your pet can travel in. If your pet is allowed up in the cabin with you, it’s recommended they are placed under your seat or at your feet. Book the shortest flight with the least amount of stops possible. Boarding and deboarding an animal in an unfamiliar and understandably anxiety-inducing environment can only exacerbate their travel experience. Look for flights that depart mid-day and mid-week for a less crowded trip.

Lodging

Time to book your apartment! You’ll be in your new city for a few months, and may have to extend your reservations. You want to choose a short-term residence that’s luxurious, furnished, and most importantly pet friendly. Most hotels or corporate apartments require a pet deposit, but it’ll be a drop in the bucket compared to boarding your pet for months at a time.
